End of Year Reflection
Going into Photography I, I expected a total different class. A class where we took pictures and called it a day. But photography was much more, it was a collaboration of camera settings, different assignments, classwork, and blog posts every month. I truly started from the bottom, taking out of focus pictures, not editing/over-editing my pictures, and having no creativity. I’d say I’m most proud of getting my blog posts up on time, and learning how to use some of the camera settings, because I had no idea shutter speed, ISO, and aperture existed. Blogs I struggled most on were composition and framing, text and image, and masters of photography. I struggled on composition and framing because it was the first assignment and truly I had no idea what I was doing, the whole idea of taking pictures had never really been my thing, so going above and beyond wasn’t on my agenda. Text and image was a difficult project because the thought of me having to come up with a text that ties in with the image is not a task that comes to me easily. I’m more of a math person than a language. Masters of photography was difficult because it was hard coming up with new pictures of a person who was so well known for photography, so there’s some sort of standards, and you don’t want to necessarily copy/mimic their pictures. The most satisfying thing about photography to me was when my photo shops actually worked out, some of the photo shops were so confusing but then when you know you did it and you can flatten the image because you know it’s ready. But pressing flatten image wasn’t always the best part, when working with photo shop that requires layers and you press flatten image it’s truly over, all your layers come into one and you have to start over if you didn’t finish.I’d start over though and everything would be fine. My most memorable assignment was hands down One thing Fifty ways, it was my most favorite project. I loved it because I could pick anything to photograph, my object, Ernie (dollar bill with eyes, legs, and arms) was something that represented me I’d say it showed a goofy side to me. Also with the same project One thing Twenty-five ways, remembering “winning” the best in the class brings a smile to my face. If I could change one thing about this class it would be the restrictions on where you can photograph during class because there’s only so much you can photograph in the same places. The three most important things I learned are making sure you have the correct camera settings, take multiple pictures so you have choices, and don’t procrastinate. I found hard before but is easy now is probably understanding the projects, not knowing if a photograph is low angle, or if it follows anything from directional line to hard light. My biggest improvements are editing, variety, and creativity. My best photograph is from my “Self-As-Subject” where I’m seen in a small hand held mirror. This picture described me on so many levels, it shows my love for makeup, and well mirrors. It also arouses a certain feeling for me that just makes me love it. I think something Mrs.Stelling could’ve done is write constructive criticism on our final grades of our photography projects, I found myself getting the same grade on a requirement that I wasn’t sure what I could do better on. Advice I would give to anyone coming into Photography I is to go far and beyond and never ever procrastinate, the feeling of being done with the project before the due date is amazing.
